Discovering Grace Together

Thank you for visiting our website.  We are the First Baptist Church in Decatur, Illinois.

At FBC, we have been getting back to the basics.  We are striving to take seriously the words of Jesus as we discover grace together.  On this journey of discovery, we have come to believe that God has given us a three-fold focus: Community, Discipleship, and Ministry.

Community - God is calling us to be an authentic community of faith bound together by the grace of God and an unconditional love for each other.

Discipleship - As individuals and as a community, we are striving to grow more deeply in our relationship with God.

Ministry - We recognize that the best way we can serve Jesus is by serving others.

As we focus on Community/Discipleship/Ministry, we are growing together as the people of God in this place.

Again, thanks for visiting our site.  Feel free to look around.  If you have any questions or want some information, give me a holler at stevemechem@yahoo.com.   We would be excited if you visited in person.  Our Sunday Worship experience is at 9:30 with Bible Study at 10:45.

By His Grace,

Pastor Steve

ABW NEEDS YOUR HELP: On September, 19, 2010, the American Baptist Women’s Ministries will be having our annual luncheon and silent auction at 12:00 noon in the fellowship hall. This is our only fund raising event that enables us to contribute to the mission projects that we try and help support. We need your presence at the luncheon but we also need you to contribute items that we can use for the auction. Last year, you were all very generous and we hope to count on your support once again.

We can use almost any type of household items: games, linens, Christmas decorations, knick knacks, puzzles, DVD’s, CD’s, books, children’s toys in great condition, tools, small appliances, jewelry, no clothes please, and that special something you got for a gift that you just can't use would probably suit someone. Please start bringing your items and place in the boxes in the coat room. Put Sunday, September 19 on your calendar and we will look forward to your participation.

Homeward Bound Program has a need currently for a young lady starting college at the University of Illinois this Fall. Her family and all of us share her pride in graduating high school with honors and now being the first in her family to go to college. Only a few years ago, the family sought housing here when they were homeless. Jenny leaves for the Urbana campus on August 18, to attend a week-long orientation and Welcome for first-time students. She needs a laptop computer for use at school and the family is unable to fund this purchase for Jenny. Do you know of anyone with a laptop they no longer use? Do you know anyone who could donate funds toward the purchase of one for Jenny? Please contact Cluney John or Barb Blakey at 428-6616, (or reply here) if you identify a way you could help.

A Concert with Rachel West Kramer at the Lincoln Square Theatre, Thursday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m. Adults $15.00, Children $7.50. Group rates are available. Call 309-383-2828 for tickets.

American Baptist Men's Conference, Friday, September, 17 and Saturday, September, 18. This year, the Conference will be held at Lake Springfield Baptist Camp (LSBC). Registration fees that include food and lodging are $25 if paid before September, 1 and $30 thereafter. We also have a few projects identified which will include chain saw work to fell trees and remove trees that have fallen across walking paths, cabin repair and playground repair. We will also be featuring New Commandment Men's Ministry that can be implemented to help widows, widowers and single moms in your local churches as well as Disaster Relief and our Haiti Relief Team dedication.
